A Post for Jenny

Bethany is wary of her own blog. I'm wary of people reading it and thinking all sorts of things about me. I've always been unduly concerned with this, but enough of that, more on that later (perhaps). I have had my first request for my blog address. Who is it from? Jenny! So, as not to disappoint Jenny, I will post some sort of new post :). Here we go:

Right now I am reading Jane Eyre. I love this book! I am at the part where Jane has just been admitted as the governess of Thornfield Hall and has only encountered the mysterious Mr. Rochester twice. Right now in my reading they are discussing Mr. Rochester's personality and how his knowledge differs from Jane's. He has traveled over half the globe and is nearly 20 years her senior. She has lived all of her life at her aunt's house for 10 years and then at Lowood School (50 miles away) for the next 8 years. Doing the math, that makes her 18. Mr. Rochester asks Jane if she would agree that, because of his wide knowledge of the world and the time that he has spent in it, he has the right to command and direct her. Jane replies: "I don't think, sir, you have a right to command me, merely because you are older than I, or because you have seen more of the world than I have; your claim to superiority depends on the use you have made of your time and experiences."

Each individual lives in a different situation, each has a variety of experiences. No matter the position in which we have found ourselves or put ourselves, the thing that matters most is what we "have made" of our time and experiences. An individual's character cannot be made out by their age or by the experiences that they have had; rather, one can learn a great deal by studying what that individual has made of what life has given him. I'm convinced we can all be happy. And now, I think I'll keep reading...

A Walk in the Rain

Yesterday the skies were dark and grey, threatening of rain, and there was a pleasant sort of undecided breeze and a touch of misty fog. These, of course, are my very favorite conditions. I decided that I must be part of them and so, with my younger sister in tow, I set out on a walk. I desired a walk in a completely secluded place, maybe a hill with trees, or near a small stream somewhere. But I live in Pleasant Grove, and although it still resembles something of a small town, lovely houseless hills and secluded streams are difficult to come by. I went to the next best thing: the canal!
I headed North on the canal, a direction I had not been in for some time, and was very pleased by what I found. Emma and I walked on the damp earth next to the very full and beautiful canal. At this part of the canal the sides are not made of concrete, but of earth, and a variety of flowers and greenery line the water. It was beautiful to walk amongst it. We noticed a beautiful and large garden in a nearby yard with 6 or 7 chickens poking around in it. We tried our hands (or mouths) at making chicken calls, until Emma became afraid of the big old rooster who was calling back and giving us menacing glances. We walked on, this time next to an orchard and a charming field. The canal turned and winded and as we walked on, occasionally hearing thunder from across the valley, we took it all in. It was beautiful, I cannot say it enough. I actually had to stop, open my arms wide, and embrace the beauty of it. We heard a clap of thunder quite nearby and rain began pouring down on us! I could stand in the rain for a very long time if given half the chance. But, having a 10 year-old in my care, I figured mother would want me to return her in a semi-dry fashion. We began to run back along the way that we had come, laughing as the rain splashed on our arms and faces. We chanced a glance at the menacing rooster, who had now taken shelter under a large cherry tree near the garden. Emma and I reached our yard and ran up the grass, Emma tripping once. I couldn't help but think of that scene from Sense and Sensibility, though luckily no Willoughbys appeared.
It was a beautiful walk. I'm the sort of girl that is crazy about 18th-19th century England...you know the type. My favorite authors (Jane Austen and Beatrix Potter being among them) are all British. Anyway, for so long I have longed to somehow someday visit there and feel what it is like. I've only read, seen movies and pictures, and imagined, but somehow my walk yesterday felt like a taste of somewhere I would love to go someday. That is how life seems to hand me blessings: I am given tastes of the things that I would love to hold and have forever, and someday, if I keep moving forward as I should, they will forever be mine. I mean, right? :)

I have a cough

I have a cough, an odd sort of hacking mid-June cough that is incredibly annoying. As annoying as it is to hardly be able to breath and to feel like someone is taking a cheese grater to the inside of my throat every time I cough (ew...that is disgusting, I can't believe I just wrote that), I do kind of enjoy being sick. Why? Because it reminds me that I am oh-so-very-human and this reminds me to be humble, which I very much desire to be. Other perks: it is an excellent reason to rationalize buying a fresh strawberry shake from Taco Amigo. Such a reason is definitely needed because I can't fork over $4.40 just like that, you know? Mmmmh, fresh strawberry shakes. I'm grateful for Strawberry days. Luckily my cough is not hindering my sleep very much, though it does require additional bedtime preparations such as placing a glass of water on my nightstand, turning on the humidifier, closing the window (mum's orders), and rubbing vaporub goop on myself. Last night I put it on my feet because apparently that is supposed to help. I couldn't really figure out exactly how it was supposed to help, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Melanie watched me and probably thought that I was crazy, but that is what sisters are for. I suppose that is all that I have to say about my cough. Haha, this is a ridiculous post.

So, Back to Blogging

I have made a decision. I want to keep blogging, and do it somewhat regularly. I sort of stopped blogging way back when because of a few reasons:

1. I had zippo time to do anything of the sort.
2. I rejoined Facebook and that kept me more connected to people (yeah...I know....but I HAD to rejoin! If you care to inquire into this matter, please do so personally and away from those who would not understand my reasons. PS, the reasons have to do with you-know-who....and that isn't Lord Voldemort).
3. I have a fear of knowing that people know more about me than I know they know. :)

Despite these reasons, I still feel it is a good idea for me to blog occasionally. It is nice to have another record of things I do and think and as much as I love my journal, I just can't fit it all in there. It may also be a good idea for me to be less scared of opening up and sharing my thoughts with people...perhaps, we'll see about that one. So that is the decision, it has been made. Maybe I'll write once a week, maybe just when I feel like I have something semi-interesting to say. Maybe no one will ever read this, that will be okay too. I'll enjoy reading it over again in a few years and recalling thoughts and feelings. But if you do read it, you are kind, and I ask for your thoughts and feelings about my thoughts and feelings, okay? This means you should comment :), and after you comment, you should have a wonderful day!

Twilight (For Melanie)

Dear Melanie (and anyone else who would like to read this),
I don't quite know how I feel about Twilight. For several years now I have been avoiding reading it purely because everyone else HAS read it. I don't know why I sometimes like to have distinction because of things I do not do, but that is just how I am. Anyway, you raved about it and told me that I should read it. I have begun, I am about half way through. Let me tell you what I think of it: It is interesting, it is easy and entertaining, but it doesn't really make any sense. Now of course things don't have to make sense for them to be enjoyable (I for one love Star Wars....wait, if you consider the role of the Force, it DOES make sense....), but when it comes to loveyness, it had better make at least some sense or I cannot see past the practicality (or lack of practicality) to the enjoyable mushiness on the other side. Edward and Bella's relationship is not very impressive to me, they do not have a good foundation for all the smooching they do, haha. Okay, I know there was that one chapter where Edward asked Bella every question on the face of the planet to get to know her...but that only took a day or two. Real love takes longer, I'm quite sure. Don't be offended Mel, it is okay because it is just a story, just don't go looking for some boy with glittering skin that thinks you smell so good he wants to drink your blood....
But keep enjoying that poster (the-most-amazing-birthday-present-ever) and the books and just don't get too crazy or start thinking that pale beautiful people must all be vampires. Oh, and you promised that if I read Twilight you would read Dracula! Now that is an amazing book, get to it!

Okay, it's not like it has been over a month or anything since I last posted... Alright so school has been busy, things have been happening, I've been ignoring my blog. But now, what with Jana starting the Hardman Gallery blog, I have been re-encouraged to keep up my own blog. So I shall post about something...think, think think... Oh, I know! The cleaning check saga...
So once upon a time there was a young girl who slaved away all day going to work and school. She lived in a modest little apartment with 5 lovely roommates. One day there appeared on their counter a cleaning check packet. The young girl decided she would pick an assignment and get to work on right away. She decided to choose to do one of the bathrooms because she felt like it would be soothing to get on her hands and knees and scrub something. So she did her best with her limited supplies, including and limited to paper towels and windex.....
The young girl then left for the weekend to visit her family in a far away land. Upon her return she discovered that the mistress of the cleaning checks had issued her the worst thing imaginable: a "fail". The young girl was devastated and confused. What had she done wrong? She felt she had done her duty rather well with only paper towels and windex. However she respected the authority of her superiors and decided with fierce determination that failure was not acceptable, and she would not fail again. She woke up early one morning and trekked to the local market place to buy proper cleaning supplies. She worked all morning vigorously, hoping that it would be enough. She then left her apartment to attend to her other duties. Upon her return she discovered that the mistress of cleaning checks had again visited, and issued her....a "pass"! The young girl was ecstatic! The mistress had even said that the young girl's performance was "fabulous". And thus we see that one should always do one's duty the best of his or her ability the FIRST time.

The Start of a New Season

I apologize to any of my loyal readers (haha), things have been so very busy that I haven't had time to write. My time is constantly claimed, from Monday morning to Friday Afternoon, but it is a good productive sort of business. I began Fall 2008 a few weeks ago and it has been really good. Here is my list of classes:
1. Hebrew 201 (crazy 2nd level Hebrew....I'm still not sure why I'm learning Hebrew other than the fact that it helps with my GE's, not many other people do it, and I have a Hebrew Selections from the Book of Mormon that I want to read better).
2. Doctrine & Covenants, 1st half. This is an amazing class! Brother Dorius (he is on the high council with dad) is a wonderful teacher.
3. Family History. Um, Dear Jana and Bonnie, I am catching the bug! I am seriously considering changing my minor from Family Life to Family History. Would this be okay with you oh-so-genius family history majors?
4. Physics. This is a really fun special section for pre-Elementary Ed majors. We do fun experiments and talk about how we can teach the concepts to kids.
5. Strengthening Marriage and Family. This is a great class taught by brother Nelson (in our ward) based on the principles of the Family Proclamation.
Okay those are my classes. Other than going to class all the time I work part-time at the BYU Evening Classes office. Some things I am liking doing right now: Writing to missionaries (one in particular, but I love writing to them all), volunteering at the MTC for Teaching Appointments, visiting my family, doing random things with roommates, and watching Stargate.
Well, that is my life right now. It is a lot of work, but it makes time go by more quickly and that is something I LOVE right now. Okay, I hope you all are well!
